How are the Victims of Human Trafficking Treated?

Human trafficking or, sometimes often known as modern day slavery is a heinous crime against human rights. It strips the victims of their most basic rights as human. The victims are often treated horribly, they would be threatened, abused, physically and emotionally and raped. Here is a quote from a victim of human Trafficking:
"He told her that he had control over her, that she belonged to him and that he could do anything he wanted to her. He became more and more abusive with her, both physically and verbally. He threatened to kill her and told her that, if she reported him to the police, he could easily hire someone to kill her for a couple of rocks of crack. He told her that if she fled, he would end up finding her and that he would stab her [translation]."
Excerpt from the decision of the court in R v. Urizar, Court of Québec, Criminal Division
Now how do you feel after reading this? Do you feel like you want to help make a change and support theses victims of human trafficking? Well you can, and you can start by informing people about this rising global issue, just like what I am doing.

What Makes a Person Vulnerable to Human Trafficking?

There are a lot of people who are trafficked to and from countries, within their borders and outside of their borders every year, but to find a exact number and statistics and how many people are trafficked within a year is hard to do, since the illegal crime of trafficking of humans is often done secretly. With this said, a few factors that often makes a person more vulnerable to this issue would be lack of education or the fact the they are in poverty and are desperate to do anything to try to get their next meal.

Lack of education and poverty are two causes that can connect with each other as to why it makes a person more vulnerable to human trafficking. First off, lack of education can restrain one’s ability to what type of jobs they can do and can't, it also limits their choices in what they would want as a career, and how much they will get paid. If a person is uneducated they are most likely to get a low paying job that might possibly be minimum wage or under minimum wage and if you have bills to pay and a family to feed it makes life really tough. So, when the person is not able to cover all the bills anymore and struggles to put food on the table for their family, it put them in poverty, which is when someone is extremely poor. If someone were very poor it makes them desperate to doing anything that will help get them money, which then makes the person vulnerable to being a victim of human trafficking. It makes it easier for the traffickers to get to them and lured them into something such a as prostitution.

Who are the Victims?

What type of people are often targeted? Well, let me tell you, that most people that are targeted are women and children and on rare occasions some are men. In Canada, most of the victims are aboriginal women or the aboriginal in general and immigrants.  To be exact, about 90 percent of the people trafficked in Canada are aboriginal women, why might you ask? Well, this is because the aboriginals have grown up in such a different environment such as others and they do not have the luxury that we do. Yes, they have schools but the schools they have are residential schools which forces them to go to school in bad and horrible conditions. Also even with the residential school they do not get much of an education, which further hinders their ability in life, such as getting a better job that pays a decent amount of money. The fact that the aboriginals, especially the women are so uneducated makes them vulnerable and an easy target to either be lured into prostitution by a trafficker or kidnapped and abused into doing so, such believing they have no other choice because they may not know anything beyond prostitution.

What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is becoming a huge issue, not only in Canada, but all around the world. People need to be aware of what human trafficking is and how unacceptable it is. To start this off I'm going to tell you what human trafficking is, human trafficking is the trade of humans very much like slavery and can be classified a modern day slavery. Human trafficking can be clearly defined as a illegal trade of humans, for the purpose of sexual exploitation, removal of organs (to sell for money), or force labour. The trafficking of humans is a colossal crime and violation upon human rights.

This issue is one of the most profitable illegal trades there is. Every year the human trafficking rink earns about couple billions, which is enormous amount of money for doing such a despicable act amongst our very own kind. Mostly women and children are the ones who are trafficked, it can happen just within the country, to different states or provinces to across the border and overseas. Often the women and children who are kidnapped would be sold to the highest bidder and forced into prostitution, unless they somehow manage to escape.
